I was a big proponent of them initially, but I think the future is the Layer 3 overlays. In pure Ethernet, there's no TTL, so Ethernet frames end up being highlanders. FabricPath/TRILL/VCS has a TTL for each frame, so that if there is a loop the frame will die. I'm not sure how SPB handles looping, I haven't seen if they somehow shunt in a TTL. Also, more hardware is capable of SPB, since most hardware can handle double 802.1Q headers. 802.1Q is a 12-bit address space, and since SPB is QinQ (doubling up on 802.1Q), they turn it into a 24-bit address space. SPB goes one better by extending the segmentation space from 4000 to 16 million. And no more spanning-tree (Radia Perlman, the creator of STP, also created TRILL). As a result, all links forward, re-convergence is much faster. SPB and TRILL (really VCS and FabricPath, there's no pure TRILL that I'm aware of) create a Layer 2 overlay to get around Ethernet's inability to multi-path. SPB is an interesting protocol in that it solves two problems (where the TRILL-based solutions only solved one). Rule #6: Homework / Educational Questions must display effort.
